CWHL Set for More Firsts in China

An already historic season is ready for more.

After scoring their first goals and then recording their first wins of the season, Kunlun Red Star and the Vanke Rays are set to take another historic step on Saturday with the first-ever CWHL games in China. It all begins at 2 p.m. China Standard Time, when Kunlun hosts the Toronto Furies. Then, at 7:30 p.m., Vanke plays its first home game against the Markham Thunder.

Two points separate the four teams in the tightly-packed CWHL standings. The Rays and Thunder sit tied for third with eight points each while Red Star and the Furies are right behind them with six points apiece. They all have the top of the standings in their sights, just six and eights points shy, respectively, of top spot.

Hockey fans in China will not only finally get to welcome their two competitive squads but will also get to cheer for the CWHL’s scoring leaders. Vanke rookies Cayley Mercer and Hanna Bunton sit first and second in League scoring with 11 and 9 points, respectively. Mercer’s seven assists lead the way while Kunlun’s Kelli Stack enters the weekend as the top goal-scorer, with seven. Bunton is right behind her with six.
