Red Star Advance to Clarkson Cup

(March 19, 2018)

Requiring 114 minutes to find a victor, the Kunlun Red Star outlasted the Calgary Inferno in a 1-0 triple-overtime Game 3 clincher on Sunday night (Mar. 18) at the Angus Glen Community Centre in Markham, Ont. The win secures the Red Star’s place in the 2018 Clarkson Cup Final in just their first season of play in the CWHL.

Kunlun netminder Noora Raty was unbeatable in the marathon game. Displaying a focus and calm under pressure, the 2018 CWHL Goaltender of the Year nominee delivered a 66 save shutout in the longest CWHL game in league history.

Despite the loss, her Inferno counterpart Delayne Brian was also impressive, allowing just one goal on 44 Red Star shots through the five periods of play.

Brian made several notable saves on eventual game-winning goal scorer Alex Carpenter throughout the game. A Boston College alumna, Carpenter consistently pushed the pace down the right wing, making attempt after attempt to cut in front of the Calgary net in the hopes of finding a way past the Inferno goalie.

On the other side, Calgary Olympian Brianne Jenner was a force throughout all five periods of action. Providing a strong forecheck and coming up with a critical backchecking effort late in the game, Jenner displayed a grit intent on finding a winner.

With both teams running on fumes, the extra burst of Carpenter allowed the Red Star to gain the zone before then capitalizing on a crowd in front of the Calgary net for the game-winner just over 14 minutes into the third overtime. Kunlun regular season scoring leaders Kelli Stack and Zoe Hickel earned assists.

The Red Star will now challenge the Markham Thunder, who swept Les Canadiennes de Montreal in their semifinal series, for the 2018 Clarkson Cup next Sunday, March 25. Puck drop is scheduled for 12 p.m. with the game also set to be broadcast on Sportsnet.
